Health and security in Myanmar

Vaccination

No vaccination is required upon entry into the country. It is imperative to be up-to-date for “universal” vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough (Repevax), hepatitis B. Add the hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines (combined vaccine: Tyavax).

It is also advised to take a preventive treatment against Malaria. Myanmar is classified in Zone 3 - where there is a high prevalence (malaria is present all year, in all areas below 1000m above sea level, except in the major urban areas of Rangoon and Mandalay).

Japanese encephalitis, a serious illness, is also cured by a vaccine (Ixiaro). It is highly recommended for long stays in the countryside or for expatriates.

For rural stays more than 48 hours away from the capital, the preventive rabies vaccine is highly recommended.

So check your detailed route accurately: if it only you visit these areas.

We strongly advise you to consult the website of the Institute Pasteur which is very well done on the subject and rich in advice.

Do not forget to have your dentition checked before leaving. It is advisable to take with you a small pharmacy kit containing products against diarrhea, for pain, disinfectant ... Ask your doctor. For people taking regular medical treatment, do not forget it.

Security

Despite the process of democratization of the regime and signs of openness, Myanmar remains a country where certain areas are forbidden for foreigners or to be avoided due to conflicts between minorities and the military. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists prohibited and avoid areas, including border areas. It is advisable to be regularly informed of the situation.

In general, the weight of baggage for international and local economy class flights is 20kg. Low cost airlines often charge for baggage in addition to the airline ticket price. It is advisable to check with the airline to avoid this kind of nasty surprises.
